  /  SLANEY

We are delighted to have this opportunity to catch up with the artist “Slaney”. She has just released a new single “By Your Side”. This is an extremely beautiful cover of the original by Sade. We wanted to find out more about this talented artist. From her musical roots and her acting career, Slaney is clearly a rising star.

By Your Side – Slaney

We love your new single “By Your Side”. Could you tell us about this track & how it came about?

“Thank you so much. I’m delighted that you love the track! I’ve always loved Sade and ‘By Your Side’ has always been one of my favourite songs. I was listening to it again recently and started messing with it on piano. Then I thought maybe I could do a cover of this and try making it my own. I also love the lyric in this song and felt that I could connect with them.”

Where is the track currently available?
” ‘By Your Side’ is currently available on all streaming platforms including Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Deezer, YouTube etc.”

What other tracks have you released to date?

So this is my fifth release. I started releasing music in 2018 with my first single ‘Recharge My Soul’ which led to releasing my other singles Lucky to be alive, 83 and Shy Away.”

How long have you been doing music?
I’ve always enjoyed music and started playing guitar from about 13. I would always come home from school and play in my bedroom learning Tracy chapman and Beatles songs. I got serious about releasing music when I met Michael Hopkins in 2016 who produces all of my songs and who I co-write with. He gave me the confidence to put out my first track and I’ve learned a lot from writing with him.

Do you write as well as sing?
“Yes I do. I really enjoy writing. I get ideas sometimes and record little voice notes on my phone. I always have a notepad near by to write down what’s on my mind because you never know what ideas might come out that could turn into the next song.

Background… where are you from?

I grew up in the beautiful countryside of Ireland in a place called Ballyconnell in Co. Carlow. It’s a very pretty part of the world surrounded by nature. I have great memories growing up there.

Are your family musical too?
Yes I come from a very musical background. My Dad, Niall Power has been a professional drummer on the Irish and international circuit working with artists such as Bob Geldof and Westlife. My Mum Shelly Power is also a terrific songwriter and singer. We wrote my first single ‘Recharge My Soul’ together. I feel very lucky to have such great relationships with them both. I have an older brother Illann Power who is always supporting me too.

What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I’m working on a lot of new songs. Over the past few months with not being able to go anywhere it’s been really amazing to have music and writing as a focus. Michael and I have been working really hard and have a lot of new music ready to release next year so I’m very excited about that! It’s been such a buzz making them and dancing around the house to your own music is great fun!

Aside of music you’ve been doing some acting. Would you like to tell us a bit more about that?
Acting is another passion of mine. I was lucky enough to be cast in the TV series Normal People directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald where I played the part of Sophie. This was my first professional role so it was very exciting and surreal to be part of such an incredible production. Earlier this year I got cast as a small role in a Sci-fi TV series called Foundation which is set to come out in 2021 on Apple TV. I’m so grateful for both of these experiences and I can’t wait to get working again.

Anything else you’d like to share?
I had my first live gig booked for the 23rd of March in a venue in Dublin called Lost Lane as part of the WeBloom sessions. It sadly got cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions but I can’t wait to start gigging whenever I can and get that going.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given that you think might help others too?
What comes to mind is my Dad saying ‘Keep doing your thing’ I’ve always loved that because it inspires me to continue to do what I love and to never give up.

Wise words from your Father. We totally agree. Thank you Slaney.
